How to replace the machine head on a guitar?

I need to replace the machine head also known as the tuning machine on a guitar. I have unscrewed it from the back of the headstock but it will not come out, Is there more to it, Is there a step by step tutorial on how to?

What’s the best way to replace the strings on an electric guitar?
Should I try to follow the tutorial videos online and is it better just to question the employees at guitar focal point to do it for me?
How do you replace the first string on a guitar?
I tried to replace the strings on my daughter’s guitar. I didn’t have any luck at all. I went to about.com/library guitar tutorial and the directions said to place the ball end of the string in the hole near the bridge. The guitar doesn’t have a hole near the bridge. I’m new at this and don’t know the instructions. Any advice would be well appreciated. Thanks a bunch!
P.S.
When I look at the other strings I don’t even see the ball part of the string to indicate how to insert the string.
